Buying Guide For: Car Speakers
When purchasing car speakers, several factors should go into your final decision. Most considerations regarding speakers deal with compatibility with factory equipment your car came with. If you have an aftermarket car stereo or amplifier, you mainly have to worry about size and sound preference when purchasing speakers.
Size is the simplest aspect of selecting car speakers. It’s very rare to need to change the size of your factory speaker. The most common sizes are 6 1/2 inch in the front doors and 6 1/2 or 6 x 9 inch in the rear. Many other sizes exist, but these common sizes make up the bulk of factory-installed speakers you might be replacing. Keep in mind that in many cars, mid-range door speakers and tweeters — the high frequency speakers — in the door or dash are designed to work together. These are called component speakers, and in most cases you need replace them at the same time for best performance.
All speakers have an impedance or resistance to an amplifier. Impedance is more important than power handling of frequency response; often, the power handling number is what is marketed, but paying attention to impedance helps you make a higher quality purchase. Impedance is measured in Ohms. Most car speakers are four ohms. With an aftermarket radio without a separate amplifier, four ohms is required. With a separate amplifier, a two ohm load is fine.
With many basic factory stereos, a four ohm replacement speaker will do fine, but an increasing number of factory stereos are designed to use two ohm or even one ohm speakers. Some factory stereos are even designed so that only certain frequencies can be reproduced from certain speakers. If your factory stereo is designed for certain frequencies, then your speaker options are reduced. You must match the speaker specs to the radio specs unless you are replacing the entire unit.
With regard to sound quality, some speakers can be a downgrade from the factory provided speakers. Some are such an upgrade, they can cost as much as your car! If you are replacing your speakers because of a defective factory speaker, and you’re not looking to improve the sound significantly, start with speakers in the $100 range per pair.
If your budget allows and you are interested in improving sound quality, search for speakers in higher price ranges that match the specifications of your existing equipment. Sound quality is a personal preference; various speakers are tailored to various types of music and preference. One thing is true: as you go up in cost, almost any brand or type of speaker increases in sound quality.
Replacing a car speaker might sound incredibly complicated, but the most difficult obstacle is often the fact that car manufacturers try so hard to get you to buy factory products. If you understand these basic points about size, impedance and sound quality, you can find replacement speakers within your budget that you will be happy with. Remember: value exists in specialization, so if you bring your options down to two or three choices, consider going with a speaker from a company that only makes speakers.
With the increased technological inventions, there are different array of speakers that can do the job. However, what matters most is the sound quality and durability. the above mentioned speakers will give you exactly what you are looking for in terms of performance, versatility and durability.
