To make a helicopter more efficient and faster in forward flight, Airbus company introduced a new concept, a helicopter with wings, for aerodynamic lift and lateral rotors for forward thrust. The concept’s code-name Rapid And Cost-Effective Rotorcraft – or RACER, for short. It will be optimized for a low acoustic signature, along with a cruising speed of over 400 km/h. Both its props and its main rotor will be driven by two RTM322 engines. Flying in economy mode allows one of those engines to be stopped, in order to save fuel and increase the flight range. Adding to its efficiency will be a lightweight hybrid metallic-composite air-frame.
Final assembly of the Racer demonstrator should begin in 2019.The aircraft is teased in the following video.
